
Alex Haley
Alex Haley was born August 11, 1921 in Ithaca, New York to Simon and Bertha
George Haley. Alex moved to Henning, Tennessee when he was just a boy and then
moved back to Ithaca when he was 5 years old. At age 15 Alex was enrolled into
Alcon University just like his father. Two years later Alex dropped out of the
school and told his father. Although his father was unhappy about his decision,
he mad him enroll into the military because he felt that Alex needed some
discipline. On May 24, 1939 Alex enlisted into the Coast Guards and began his
20 years of service. At the end of World War 2 Alex became a journalist, and by
1949 he became a Petty Officer First Class in the field of journalism.
After Alex retired from the military he began his writing career. Haley
would eventually conduct a few famous interviews for Playboy from Martin Luther
King Jr., Malcolm X, Melvin
Belli, Sammy Davis Jr. Jim Brown, Johnny Carson, Quincy Jones and even the founder of the Neo-Nazi’s George Lincoln Rockwell. Haley also
wrote the autobiography of Malcolm x, the book Super fly T.N.T which was
released in 1973, and Roots released in 1976. February 10th, 1992 in
Seattle, Washington Alex Haley sadly died at the age of 70.
